Kaylee Strong Fun Run For Ovarian Cancer Awareness Raises $21,375

Kaylee Strong Fun Run Raises $21,375 For Ovarcome

Kaylee is a beautiful, smart, spunky and STRONG 9-year-old girl who was diagnosed with stage IIIA2 Ovarian Cancer. She underwent surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital to remove a 10cm Germ Cell Tumor.  Surgery was a success, but the cancer had spread requiring her to complete 4 rounds of chemotherapy. Now cancer free, Kaylee is an inspiration to many as an OVARCOMER.

The Kaylee Strong motto is “No One Fights Alone”.  In honor and observance of ovarian cancer awareness month, Kaylee and the Tolleson Family hosted a Togetherness Trot (5K Fun Run/Walk) with a Zumba Morning Warm Up, Music, Food & Fun on September 7, 2019, to raise awareness on ovarian cancer and to raise funds for their Charity of Choice, Ovarcome. In an unprecedented show of support from the community, The Kaylee Strong Fun Run brought 470 participants together to bring awareness on Ovarian Cancer as the participants walked together.

In an amazing display of solidarity, the Event Sponsors all came together to support the event and make it a grand success. Dr. Anil Sood, Ovarcome’s Chief Advisory Board Member, and Director of the Blanton Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center was present at the event to give a talk on ovarian cancer awareness. ABC13 Chief Meteorologist Travis Herzog, who has championed Kaylee all long through her journey was also present with his family to show his support to Kaylee and the cause. Ovarcome’s Founder, Runsi Sen brought the crowd together by chanting KAYLEE STRONG! TOGETHER, WE OVARCOME!

Ovarcome in its seventh year was founded by Runsi Sen, whose passion about ovarian cancer awareness comes from personal experience. Her mother got diagnosed with ovarian cancer in advanced stages and passed away within a year of diagnosis.

Ovarcome has established itself as an organization that has helped thousands of women around the world ovarcome a disease that has caused more deaths than any other gynecologic cancer. In addition to research funding, and global awareness work, Ovarcome’s patient assistance program, OvarCare provides financial assistance to ovarian cancer patients in need nationwide in partnership with more than 100 hospitals across the country.

Ovarcome wants you to learn and share the B.E.A.C.H. symptoms of ovarian cancer.

Common symptoms of ovarian cancer include:

  • Bloating: Increased abdominal size / persistent bloating (not bloating that comes and goes)
  • Early Satiety: Difficulty eating/feeling full quickly
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Changes in bowel and bladder habits
  • Heightened fatigue

There is no screening available for ovarian cancer yet. In the absence of a test, awareness is best. Early detection leads to more than a 93 percent five-year survival rate, but unfortunately, more than 75 percent of women are diagnosed at an advanced stage because of the lack of screening.

Ovarcome now has an official national day. The Registrar at National Day Calendar declared Teal Talk Day to be observed each year on Sept. 23 globally, to encourage everyone to be vocal about this silent disease. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner also proclaimed the day to be Ovarcome Teal Talk Day.
