‘Watching’ Cysts vs. Removing Them: Expert Guidance

A new research study led by a team of international scientists followed a large cohort of women from ten countries diagnosed with non-cancerous ovarian cysts. The study was conducted for two years.  Details of the study can be found here: https://medicalxpress.com/news/2019-02-ovarian-cysts.html

This study discusses the treatment alternatives in benign cysts: surgical removal to avoid serious complications, or ‘watchful waiting’ where the size and appearance of the cysts are monitored with regular ultrasound scans, as in certain cases these cysts might shrink or disappear or not change over time.

Opinion on treatment options is still divided. We spoke with our resident Expert and Chief Advisory Board Member, Dr. Anil Sood to share his reflections on this topic.

According to Dr. Sood, the prospective design as well as the large number of women followed are definite strengths of this study. In this interim 2 year analysis, the focus is on the 54% of patients selected for conservative management. Presumably the data on those treated surgically will be presented at a later time.

It is absolutely encouraging that this study reports a low risk of malignancy and acute complications, with conservative management of masses considered to be benign by ultrasound. It would be important to see the mature data for the entire cohort. There is also a need for clear criteria for the masses on ultrasound – such classifications would be important to see if they can be generalized to broader populations.

What Is The Message For Us and You?

It is still premature to make a conclusive evidence on watching cysts vs. removing them. Your case should be specifically evaluated by your physician in determining the appropriate next steps for you.
