I am “Ovar the Moon” To Be Celebrating 5 Years Cancer Free This Spring!

Beth Patterson was diagnosed with Stage 2B high grade serous carcinoma in October 2011, shortly after her daughters left home for college. She had been experiencing some unexplained weight gain in the abdomen, had bouts of indigestion and had been feeling full intermittently, but didn’t think too much of the symptoms. She also noticed a lump in her abdomen, which was unusual. Beth went to a Gastroenterology Specialist, but after series of x-rays, was told there was nothing to be concerned about. Beth wasn’t convinced as she felt something was not quite right – she then followed up with her Gynecologist who immediately set her on the right path with an ultrasound and CT-Scan which would eventually reveal her cancer. Beth had surgery four days later. She also underwent a series of 6 chemo treatments after full hysterectomy and completed treatment in the spring of 2012. Her own awareness of her body and her determination in pursuing correct treatment helped her get diagnosed at an earlier stage. Beth worked part-time during her treatment, then returned to work full time about 3 months after her treatment was completed.

Losing her hair during treatment as an outward sign of illness was a difficult adjustment to make for Beth. She worried about the long term side effects cancer treatment could bring, as well as the fact that she might not live to see her daughters graduate from college. “The possibility of recurrence is always at the back of my mind, but over time it gets easier.” Beth says. Even though the journey was difficult, Beth believes many good things and blessings came out of her experience. New friendships were formed, old friendships were renewed and she went through her treatment keeping her strength, optimism and her spirits high!

Beth was fortunate to be able to work part time during treatment.Cancer wasn’t life limiting for her. She is deeply grateful to her doctors – her gynecologist, Dr. Joann Samora-Mata; her surgeon, Dr. Geri Fromm, and her oncologist Dr. Michael Frumovitz, and all the nurses and staff at MD Anderson and St. Lukes for their support. Beth says, “I would not have made it through this journey without the unconditional love and steadfast support of my husband literally every step of the way. I am ever grateful to our daughters, who bring me great joy, for their love and support. And of course to many friends and family who gathered around us, prayed for us, and held us all up during those times.”

Beth heard about Ovarcome right around the time she was undergoing chemotherapy. She is greatly appreciative of the work Ovarcome is doing in raising awareness on ovarian cancer, and in also assisting survivors in need. “Without a cure, early detection is critical, and that is why what Ovarcome is doing is so very important. Awareness of symptoms and our own bodies is very empowering for women.” – Beth said

Beth Patterson is married to her husband Jim for 27 years, and has two daughters, Emily and Lauren, age 23. Beth is a lawyer for ConocoPhillips. She recently had her 5 year check up and doing great!
