Our OvarCare Recipient from Pittsburgh, TaKeyla received her Ovarian Cancer diagnosis in September 2020, at only 22 years of age.
TaKeyla started experiencing the C of the B.E.A.C.H. Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer:
B = Bloating
E = Early Satiety or Feeling Full Quickly
A = Abdominal and/or Pelvic Pain
C = Changes in Bowel & Bladder Habits
H = Heightened Fatigue
As Takeyla continued to experience the bladder symptoms for a few months, she attributed it to not hydrating herself and not drinking water adequately. Then her abdomen starting growing and became hard. At that time, she was living in Arizona. When she moved back to Pittsburgh, her Mom thought TaKeyla was pregnant. Takeyla told her Mom that it wasn’t possible, and that she was just bloated. TaKeyla’s Mom being a nurse, suspected it could be a tumor, and suggested to her to get checked.
However, the rigors of life and work kept TaKeyla from going to the Doctor. Eventually she went to a Clinic where they told her it was muscle spasms. Her Mom insisted she get it further evaluated, but TaKeyla not thinking much of it, continued to work. In August of 2020, TaKeyla went out with her friends one day, and while walking around with them, started having breathing difficulties. She was rushed to the ER – a CT scan could not identify her left ovary. Further diagnostics and eventual surgery revealed a 13 pound tumor! TaKeyla was diagnosed with Stage IC-1 Ovarian Cancer.
TaKeyla shared with us that she doesn’t carry a genetic mutation, and was diligent in getting her genetic testing done. Neither side of her family has any history of cancer.
In this journey of OVARCOMING, TaKeyla is lovingly supported by her Grandmas on both sides, her Mom and Dad, Cousins and her Aunt. Her Mom works 3 jobs and is not able to visit with TaKeyla as much, but keeps in touch with her every day via phone and texts – she keeps TaKeyla’s spirits up as she takes on this journey to Ovarcome.
TaKeyla wants to emphasize the message that it is crucial to “listen to your body”, to not ignore symptoms and to be proactive with one’s own health.
COPING WITH CORONA:
TaKeyla is staying home, and generally away from people. She wears masks and sanitizes regularly, as needed. She is careful to not come in close contact with others, as she realizes her immune system is compromised due to the rigorous treatments.
Please join us in sending our love, hugs and best wishes to TaKeyla as she undertakes chemotherapy and walks this path of Ovarcoming. Together We Uplift. Together We OVARCOME!
