Our OvarCare Recipient, Blanca Brown, shares her story of OVARCOMING!

Blanca did not have any significant symptoms other than feeling pelvic pressure or heaviness while bending over. When Blanca went for her Well Woman Check Up, her Doctor “felt a lump.” She had a biopsy the following week and consequent tests confirmed malignancy.

Blanca was first diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer in 2011. She underwent complete hysterectomy and three to four weeks later started chemo. Ms. Brown states she experienced adverse side effects from the chemo: she lost weight, became pale and could not eat. Blanca shared that her body locked up from the waist down, her mouth twisted to the side and her fingers also twisted. She couldn’t walk properly, and could barely talk legibly. It took the Doctors several attempts to bring her side effects under control. After nine years her CA125 has finally fallen to 9! YAY! Blanca is now able to tolerate her chemo better, and is currently in active treatment.

Blanca has experienced much difficulty in getting her Genetic Testing done due to insurance and other issues. She lost her house, and is now living with her son in New York. She is still trying to determine how to get her Genetic Testing taken cancer of. Blanca’s son is her primary support. She prays and keeps her faith and her spirits up.

COPING WITH CORONA:

Blanca is careful about protecting herself from COVID19. She shared with us that she disinfects everything, wears an N95 mask and over that a designer mask! Yeah! She is careful about not using public restrooms and tries not to be around people, as she knows her immunity is compromised.

BUT, she still dresses like she is going to work, does her makeup, wears a hat and does her nails, keeps herself up at all times. She says her nurses tease her saying “Here comes the DIVA!”
