Stay Positive. Stay Centered. OVARCOME!
Candy Atkins shares her amazing story of self advocacy leading up to her diagnosis with ovarian cancer. Candy had been feeling fatigued and gaining weight – feeling numb in her legs and experiencing intermittent pain in her abdomen. Ultrasound tests revealed no abnormal results.
Candy’s Mom had passed away from ovarian cancer – but she wasn’t given any additional tests at that time. Candy lived with these symptoms for almost 2 years.
3 years ago, Candy’s stomach started distending 2-3 inches a month and she soon started looking 9 months pregnant. She couldn’t eat or breathe properly. However, her symptoms kept getting attributed to being overweight, having backed up stool, or IBS.
With the knowledge of family history and in knowing her body and listening to it’s symptoms, Candy kept advocating for her own health and demanding additional tests, until her ovarian cancer was finally diagnosed in May 2016. Candy underwent surgery and took her chemo treatments and went in remission for about 5 months. She also started doing holistic, alternative treatments to contain her cancer, as well as to enhance her quality of life.
Even though Candy’s Mom passed away from ovarian cancer, and she has two cousins on her Mom’s side of the family with melanoma and breast cancer; her BRCA testing came out negative. Candy has two boys of her own, living in opposite ends of California, but they are supportive and help as much as possible as she goes through this journey. Candy is a loving Grandma to her two beautiful grand children! Candy shared with us that she considers herself blessed to have the support of her friends and family as she undergoes treatment for ovarian cancer.
