Patricia’s Pledge To Ovarcome: Learn The Symptoms!
Patricia King, one of our OvarCare recipients, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in February 2018. Patricia shared her story of diagnosis and her journey with ovarian cancer with Ovarcome. Since Thanksgiving of 2017, she had been feeling unwell. One days she woke up with a terrible feeling of something being stuck in the upper part of her abdomen accompanied with very bad indigestion. She didn’t have health insurance at that time, so resorted to treating her symptoms with ginger ale. She didn’t visit a doctor until January – by then she was in extraordinary pain in her pelvic as well as lower back area, aggravated by any kind of movement. She landed in the ER but was sent home with a diagnosis of acid re-flux. Patiria says she had ALL classic symptoms of ovarian cancer, but wasn’t aware of them. She couldn’t eat at all, and little nibbles of food would fill her up completely.
Patricia visited a GI Specialist for consultation as well as her OB-GYN who performed a physical exam on her. She also ordered an ultrasound for Patricia in 2 weeks. However, in 2 days she had to be back at the ER with unbearable pain – this time they ran imaging tests and CT scan and she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
Once diagnosed, things moved quickly – Patricia had a complete hysterectomy and then started her chemotherapy treatment. She initially had reservations about the toxic effects of the chemo treatment and was searching for alternative medicinal treatment, but given her stage III-C diagnosis, she decided to take chemotherapy.
Cancer runs in Patricia’s family. Her sister got diagnosed with uterine and cervical cancer, of the rare and aggressive kind. Patricia is BRCA (+)ve, so she understands the implications and the importance of genetic testing. Patricia has a daughter and is a grand mom to three beautiful grand daughters. So, she plans to encourage her family members to get tested as well. She is thankful for the wonderful family support she has surrounding her, as she goes through her journey with ovarian cancer.
It is a difficult journey, but Patricia is looking forward to ovarcoming her cancer, and stepping into the second act of her life. We are so happy to have been able to provide her with our OvarCare assistance, as Patricia has been unable to work due to her treatment. She is keeping her spirits up and her strength to Ovarcome. Please send Patricia your prayers and best wishes.
